Local Exchange (also referred to as a Local Loop, subscriber line, or in the aggregate as the last mile) is the physical link or circuit that connects from the demarcation point of the customer's premises to the edge of the common carrier or telecommunications service provider's network.

Local Exchange is part of the Telecommunications Network Chain

Local Exchange delivers dial tone to the customer.

In "historical" PSTN terminology this was referred to as a "Class 5" Office but in recent years, many of the "Class 5" Offices have been eliminated and expended to be "Class 4" offices.
