Overview #

Provenance is defined in dictionaries as the place of origin or earliest known history of something. [1]

Provenance, for our purposes, is information about entities and their activities involved in the origin of data or a thing, which can be used to make assessments about the quality, reliability or trustworthiness.

Provenance provides a critical foundation for assessing authenticity, enabling trust, and allowing reproducibility.

Provenance assertions are a form of contextual metadata and can themselves become important records with their own provenance.

Provenance and Accountability#

Provenance is required to determine Accountability when the Data or Claims cause an Unfortunate event.
