RFC 2253 String Representation of Distinguished Names states "..the following characters which need escaping..

  • a space occurring at the beginning of the string
  • # character occurring at the beginning of the string
  • a space character occurring at the end of the string
  • any of the characters:

    • <
    • >
    • ;
