BIOS is an Abbreviation of Basic Input-Output System.

BIOS is non-volatile firmware used to perform hardware initialization during the booting process (power-on startup), and to provide runtime services for Operating Systems and programs.

BIOS also provides a basic Configuration Management interface for the Device's hardware components where you might be able to configure such things as the order to read Disk partitions during Booting and how fast the processor should be allowed to run. BIOS typically confirms there is a "valid" Boot Loader and perhaps the location of the Master Boot Record (MBR).
