DNT (Do Not Track) is the proposed HTTP Header Field and a HTTP Request Header that indicates the User-agent tracking preference.

DNT has proposed standards from WC3 and an Internet Draft https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-mayer-do-not-track-00

DNT indicates in the HTTP Request whether they would prefer privacy rather than personalized content.

DNT has one HTTP Header Directive which has one of the following values:

  • 0 - User-agent] prefers to allow tracking on the target Website
  • 1 - User-agent] prefers not to be tracked on the target Website
  • (none) - if the user has not expressed a preference
The default behavior required by the proposed standard is not to send the header unless it is enabled the setting via their browser or their choice is implied by use of that specific User-agent.
