Use this information to manage your servers when [eDirectory] or [NDS] error conditions exist. [eDirectory] or [NDS] [Result Codes] are usually displayed in [decimal] numbers.
Sometimes an [application] displays these codes using [hexadecimal] values.
These error code numbers can be categorized as follows:
!! [eDirectory and NDS Operating System Error Codes]
Certain [eDirectory] or [NDS] background processes or operations require the use or functionality provided by the operating system on which eDirectory or NDS is running. These functions, such as communication and transaction servers, can return operating system specific error codes to eDirectory or NDS. These error codes are then passed on to the eDirectory or NDS background process or operation that initiated a request. In NetWare® 4.x, versions of NDS can also generate operating system error codes.
Generally, all operating system error codes that are generated by eDirectory or NDS have a negative numerical representation while all other operating system error codes have a positive numerical representation. The numerical range for operating system error codes generated by eDirectory or NDS is -1 through -256, while the numerical range for operating system error codes is 1 through 255.
To provide backward compatibility with older applications, eDirectory or NDS will return the positive numerical error code rather than the negative error code normally used by eDirectory or NDS. Therefore, any occurrence of an error code within the range of 1 to 255 or -1 to -255 should be treated as the same error.
!! [eDirectory] and [NDS] [Client] Error Codes
Certain eDirectory or NDS background processes or operations require the use or functionality provided by other eDirectory or NDS servers. Use of these functions, such as bindery services, requires that an eDirectory or NDS server act as an eDirectory or NDS client to the server providing the functionality. Consequently, these functions can result in client-specific error codes being returned to the eDirectory or NDS background processes and operations. These error codes are generated by the eDirectory or NDS client that is built into eDirectory or NDS (ds.nlm). The eDirectory or NDS client error codes fall in the range of codes numbered -301 through -399 (or FED3 through FDA6).
!! Other eDirectory or NDS Error Codes
Certain eDirectory or NDS background processes or operations require the use or functionality provided by other NLMTM programs, such as timesync.nlm or unicode.nlm. If any of these modules encounter an error, it can be passed on to the ds.nlm. Unicode* and other errors in this category range from -400 to -599.
!! [eDirectory or NDS Agent Error Codes]
Error codes numbered -601 through -799 (or FDA7 through F9FE) and -6001 or higher represent errors that originated in the eDirectory or NDS Agent software in the server that are returned through eDirectory or NDS.
Because the eDirectory or NDS database is designed as a loosely consistent database, temporary errors are normal. You should not be alarmed if eDirectory or NDS error conditions exist temporarily. However, some errors might persist until the error condition is resolved.
