[{$pagename}] describes an imperative [API] enabling a [website] to request a user’s [credentials] from a [user-agent], and to help the [user-agent] correctly store user [credentials] for future use.[{$pagename}] is intentionally small and simple: [{$pagename}] does not intend to provide [authentication] in and of itself, but is limited to providing an interface to the existing [Credential Management] implemented by existing [user-agents]. That functionality is valuable right now, without significant effort on the part of either vendors or authors. There’s certainly quite a bit more which could be done, of course.
