Overview#
Metadata is a (string, token, key, Attribute, Property, Indirect Identifier) that provides Classification or describes, explains, locates, or otherwise makes it easier to retrieve, identify use, or manage a data.Metadata may be thought of as Attributes about the data
Metadata is often called data about data or information about information.
Metadata may be obtained for the data by users, or by automated capture from cameras or scanners or other methods.
Metadatais stored in two main places:
- Internally – embedded in the data.
- Externally – outside the data Digital Asset Management (DAM) system or by a “sidecar” file, such as XMP, or an external news exchange format file.
Metadata and Big data#
With advances of Big data and Machine Learning models, Metadata may be used to Uniquely provide Identification of an Entity even though the Metadata was supposed to be Anonymous[1] which brings into question the ability for Data anonymizationMore Information#
