The ANONYMOUS SASL mechanism is a type of [SASL] authentication mechanism.  

[{$pagename}] is different from other [SASL] mechanisms in that it is used to create an unauthenticated session, and will destroy any previous authentication that may have been performed on the connection.

The [{$pagename}] provides the ability to include trace information in the request that may be included in the server's access log.  This trace information can provide information about the client performing the bind, although because no authentication is performed the validity of the trace information cannot be guaranteed.
