Base Station Controller (BSC) is a component of the is the component of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and specifically the Base Station Subsystem that handles radio channel setup, frequency hopping, and handovers.The Base Station Controller is the connection between the Mobile Station and the Mobile Switching Center and therefore the Mobile Network.
Some examples of Base Station Controller
- Base Transceiver Station is a Base Station Controller within the GSM Mobile Networks
- eNodeB is a Base Station Controller within the UMTS Mobile Networks
Base Station Controller also translates the 13 Kbps voice channel used over the radio link to the standard 64 Kbps channel used by the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) or Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).
