Data Loss Prevention is the Prevention of Data Leakage breaches/data ex-filtration transmissions and prevents them by monitoring, detecting and blocking data while it is Data In Process, Data In Transit, and Data At Rest.

Data Loss Prevention SHOULD consider the Data Security Impact

The terms "data loss" and "Data Leakage" (LDAPWiki uses Data Breach) are related and are often used interchangeably. However, it is possible to have a "Data Leakage" without losing the data (Data Breach)

Other terms associated with data leakage prevention are information leak detection and prevention (ILDP), information leak prevention (ILP), content monitoring and filtering (CMF), information protection and control (IPC) and extrusion prevention system (EPS), as opposed to intrusion prevention system.
