An approximate index is a type of [index|Definition -- Index] which is used to efficiently identify which entries are approximately equal to a given assertion value.  An approximate index may only be maintained for attributes that have a corresponding approximate [matchingRule].  That matching rule will be used to [normalize values|Definition -- Normalized Value] to use as index keys, and the value for that key will be the [ID list|Definition -- ID List] containing the [entry IDs|Definition -- Entry IDs] of the entries with values that are approximately equal to that normalized value.
