Overview#
IEEE 802.1 is a network definition for the
IEEE MAC Bridge standard which includes
Bridging,
Spanning Tree and others. IEEE 802.1 is standardized by the
IEEE 802.1 Working Group. IEEE 802.1 includes details specific to linking many of the other 802 projects including the widely deployed
IEEE 802.3 (
Ethernet),
IEEE 802.11 (
Wireless LAN) and
IEEE 802.16 (
WiMax)
standards.
VLAN (
Virtual LAN) is not part of
IEEE 802.1, but specified in
IEEE 802.1Q.
Network Switches are included in IEEE 802.1 however some
Network Switches are capable of incorporating
Routing functions are commonly known as
layer-3 switches or
multilayer switches.
