Overview#
Local Exchange (also referred to as a Local Loop,
Phone Line,
Telephone Line,
Telephone Circuit or in the aggregate as the last mile) is the physical link or
Telephone Circuit that connects from the demarcation point of the
Customer Premises Equipment (
CPE) to the edge of the common carrier or
telecommunications Service Provider's
network which is may be a
Telephone exchange
Local Exchange is part of the Telecommunications Network Chain
Local Exchange delivers dial tone to the customer.
In "historical" PSTN terminology this was referred to as a "Class 5" Office but in recent years, many of the "Class 5" Offices have been eliminated and expended to be "Class 4" offices.
