MAY or the adjective "
OPTIONAL" (
RFC 2119), which are
Case-sensitive (
RFC 8174) mean that an item is truly optional.
One vendor may choose to include the item because a particular marketplace requires it or because the vendor feels that it enhances the product while another vendor may omit the same item.
We may use MAY in other contexts but we are implying the same interpretation as a Best Current Practice
MAY (also seen as
OPTIONAL) indicates the
Attributes that MAY contain values on an
ObjectClass.
