Overview#
MITRE Corporation (stylized as
MITRE) is an American
not-for-profit organization based in Bedford, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia.
MITRE Corporation manages Federally Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) supporting the United States Department of Defense (DOD), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts on behalf of the Federal Judiciary, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
MITRE Corporation maintains the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) system and the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) project.
History#
MITRE Corporation was itself spun off from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (
MIT) MIT Lincoln Laboratory which began in the
1950s as the Lincoln Project at
MIT. The Lincoln Laboratory was created to develop ground radar air defense systems for the United States. The MITRE Corporation was established as the "system engineer and overseer for the development of this highly complex system."
