Overview[1]#
Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) is a technology that emits a magnetic signal that mimics the Magnetic Stripe Data on a traditional Payment CardMagnetic Secure Transmission sends a magnetic signal from your device to the payment terminal's card reader (to emulate swiping a physical card without having to upgrade the terminal’s software or hardware).
Magnetic Secure Transmission technology is accepted at nearly all POS Terminals with a card reader. Some payment POS Terminals may require software updates.
Magnetic Secure Transmission generates an alternating current through an inductive loop of changing magnetic fields. The Magnetic Secure Transmission signal received from the device emulates the same magnetic field change as a Magnetic Stripe Card when swiped across the same read head.
Magnetic Secure Transmission works within a 3-inch distance from the read head.[2]
Magnetic Secure Transmission was patented by LoopPay (now Samsung Pay), a digital Wallet solution that allows consumers to pay with their mobile devices.[2]
Magnetic Secure Transmission is only used during the transmission process.[2]
Magnetic Secure Transmission technology is not limited by form factor, making it a practical technology for mobile payments and is accepted by approximately 90% of merchants. In general, Magnetic Secure Transmission does not require merchants to make changes to their existing payment systems.[2]
