Overview#

The Merchant is offering goods or services that the customer wants to buy.

Merchant is defined in PCI as any entity that accepts Payment Card bearing the logos of any of the five members of PCI SSC (American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or Visa) as payment for goods and/or services.”

Merchant is one member of the The Four-Party Credit Card System

Merchant are Authorized through an Enrollment by a Card Processor (MSP)

Merchant Responsibilities[1]#

The Merchant’s roles and responsibilities are as follows:

Capture card data from the Credit Card
Initiate and authorize the purchase transaction through the Payment Network.
Verify Cardholder identity.
Capture the transaction for onward submission to the merchant Acquirer.
Pay a fee called the Merchant Service Commission (MSC) to the merchant Acquirer.

Merchants assigned a Merchant Category Code by the Card Issuer when the Merchant first starts accepting Payment Cards
