Overview#

The Name Service Switch consists of 16 types of information and the various sources that may be used in the getXbyY routines search for that information.

The 16 types of information, (there maybe more) not necessarily in this order, are:

• aliases
• bootparams
• ethers
• group
• hosts
• ipnodes
• netgroup
• netmasks
• networks
• passwd (includes shadow information)
• protocols
• publickey
• rpc
• services
• automount
• sendmailvars

Soem of these maybe cached by NSCD or SSSD.
