Overview#

NamingContext is an Attribute found in the RootDSE which specifies values of this attribute correspond to naming contexts which this DSA masters or shadows.

If the DSA does not master any information (e.g. it is an LDAP gateway to a public X.500 directory) the NamingContext attribute will be absent.

If the DSA believes it contains the entire Directory Information Base, the attribute will have a single value, and that value will be the empty string indicating the null DN of the top of the Directory Information Tree.

NamingContext attribute will allow a client (DUA) to choose suitable BaseDN for searching when it has contacted a DSA.
