History#

The commercial name OctetString refers to the former software firm based in Schaumburg, Illinois, that published OctetString Virtual Directory (VDE), a LDAP based virtual directory product focused on the identity management segment of the security software market.

The company was founded in 2000 by Clayton Donley and Nathan Owen, two consultants who left IBM to start the company.

On November 16, 2005 the company was acquired by Oracle Corporation.

Oracle Aquired#

Effective November 16th, 2005, the acquisition of OctetString by Oracle became final. Together Oracle and OctetString will further enhance Oracle's market-leading security infrastructure and bring to market the industry's most robust, heterogeneous, and complete identity and SOA management offerings. OctetString's Virtual Directory Engine is now the Oracle Virtual Directory and is part of Oracle Fusion Middlware under Oracle Identity Management solutions. Specifically, Oracle Virtual Directory is a component of the Oracle Identity and Access Management Suite, the most complete identity management suite available.

Oracle Virtual Directory allows applications to access user identity information contained in various existing identity sources, such as LDAP-enabled directories and databases, and presents it to the application as one data source. As a result, organizations are able to bring new solutions online faster, which translates into a greater return on investment (ROI).
