Provenance is defined in dictionaries as the place of origin or earliest known history of something. Provenance, for our purposes, is data about
entities and their activities involved in the
origin of
data or a
thing, which can be used to make assessments about the quality,
reliability or
trustworthiness. In other words

Provenance provides a critical foundation for assessing authenticity, enabling trust, and allowing reproducibility.
Provenance assertions are a form of contextual metadata and can themselves become important records with their own provenance.
