Overview#

Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a communication protocol between Mobile Network Operators (MNO) and between devices, aiming at replacing SMS messages with an Instant Messaging system that is more rich, provide phonebook polling (for service Discovery Mechanism), and transmit in-call multimedia.Rich Communication Services has been under GSMA since 2008

Rich Communication Services Technology#

Rich Communication Services uses a Federated Identity model where different carriers are in charge of the servers that deliver messages to their Subscribers which makes it more complicated as there is no central database. Rich Communication Services sends a query directly to the other devices on that chat with an invisible message to determine asking if the device supports Rich Communication Services.

Rich Communication Services is still tied to a Phone Number.

Rich Communication Services Implementations#

Rich Communication Services according to GSMA has at least 50 Mobile Network Operators, none of them have significant Implementations.Samsung is the major device OEM to support Rich Communication Services globally. Samsung RCS capable devices have been commercially launched in Europe since 2012 and in the United States since 2015.
