Overview#
Rights Expression Language (
REL) is a machine-processable language used to express
Intellectual Property Rights (such as
copyright) and other terms and conditions for use over
data. Rights Expression Languages can be used as standalone expressions (ie
Data Metadata usable for search, compatibility tracking) or within a
Digital Rights Management (
DRM) systems.
Rights Expression Languages are expressible in a machine-language including but not limited to:
- XML
- RDF
- RDF Schema
- JSON
- Other open or Proprietary ProtocolRights Expression Language may be processed directly, they can also be encountered when embedded as metadata within other documents, such as eBooks, image, audio or video files.
