Confusion with AuxiliaryClass attribute#

It appears that the SystemAuxiliaryClass can only be used at ObjectClass creation time and the AuxiliaryClass attribute can be used after creatiopn, but we are unclear on this issue. Why is there what appears to be two attributes that are used for the same thing?
